The Invisible String Activity

The main point and message of the activity
This activity is great for ages 4-8 and involves a read along of a book followed by an activity with an important lesson. During this time of social distancing it is challenging for kids to keep those connections with their friends and loved ones that they are so used to seeing almost every day. This activity will remind children that they are never alone with the help of the “invisible string”, and that they will always be loved and can depend on their relationships with loved ones. The craft activity will allow children to reflect on their special relationships and what makes them so special and unique.

Materials Needed:
Invisible String Audio Video Reading or Hardcopy of the Invisible String by Patrice Karst
Paper (the more colorful the better)
Scissors
Writing Materials
Stapler (glue would work too)

Book
Start by reading the Invisible String or listening and watching the audio book on YouTube.

Activity
1)      Before starting the crafting activity, discuss with your children who is someone they miss seeing often and cannot due to the social distancing. Ask if they have an invisible string with them, this may be a classmate, teacher, family member, sibling, etc.
2)      Once they think of an individual, ask them to brainstorm what makes their relationship so special, or what they love about that individual
3)      Cute the blank pieces of paper into long strips

1)      One the long pieces of paper write down the name of the individual and on the other pieces all of the activities, characteristics, memories, etc. they brainstormed. Until they have at least 10-12 pieces

1)      Take the strip of paper with the name and form it into a circle shape with the name facing the outside, use the stapler or glue to make the shape stay together

1)      Next, take another piece of paper that has been written on and stick it through the circular piece and form another circle connected to it, and staple or glue it to hold shape.

1)      Continue this process until chain is completed

1)      Once it is finished, put the completed paper chain in a visible location, like in your child’s room so they can see it and be reminded of that special relationship.
