Target Age Range: Preschool up into late Elementary
Items Needed (Very Minimal): An imagination and whatever items you have around the place you live J
Optional: Write/Draw out the story on Paper! (most supplies, paper & colored pencils/crayons)
For this ‘Simple Storytime’ children get to, not only create a new story, but also get to choose the characters and items they will include, by using ordinary household items. This is a great way to get your younger children moving their bodies and their brains! Who doesn’t love a quick activity that involves some time to create something new!
Part 1: Gathering Time!
For this first part, the only thing you will need to do is have your child(ren) go around the place you live and pick 5 random items. I would allow around 5 minutes for this part. The less time they have, the more random and sillier the items will be.
For my example: I walked around my home and found one thing in each room, I ended up with….
1) One Nike Slide
2) A package of peanut butter crackers
3) A small basketball
4) Some fake flowers
And…..
5) A tiny pink tiger
Part 2: What do you want your story to look like?
1. Now that everyone has found what items they are going to use, go around the room, and have each person share what they picked up.
2. This is where the fun happens, based on the supplies that are available, you have the opportunity to choose how you want to create your story!
A) Draw/Write out your story or create a background with paper to use when you tell the story
For my example, I used coloring pencils and some printer paper. I drew a scene, for my pink tiger, Freddy, to play in. In my story the basketball is the sun, the flowers became plants that Freddy’s favorite food grows on and the Nike Slides became a water slide into a pool! (all pictured below)
When I finished my drawing, I placed the elements that I had not drawn on and told my story...
B) Use the items found to act out the story! Have each child tell their own story, and use each of the items throughout it!
My story goes as this….. (Use your voice, scene, or just the items to tell your story)
One beautiful sunny day, Freddy decided to explore on his own! He knew that the basketball sun would keep him warm, and found comfort in the fact that the sun had stripes just like him! He went for a walk and stumbled upon an interesting sight! “What the heck”, Freddy said. “I have never that kind of water slide”. The slide he was staring at was a mega water slide in the shape of a Nike shoe. “How crazy is that” Freddy exclaimed. Before even thinking, he climbed up the ladder and slid right into the pool. “Woo, that feels good”, said Freddy as he floated around. He was so excited about the slide and pool that he did not even realize that his next to the pool was a beautiful plant. Woah, what is growing on the plant? It sure does smell delicious, he said. Without hesitation, he ran up the plant and grabbed one of the treats. “Crunchy, salty, sweet…..mmmmm…peanut butter!!!” said Freddy. Peanut butter has always been one of his favorite snacks, but placing it on crackers? He had never thought of that. What a gamechanger. Freddy is so glad that he went outside today and explored something new, he never would have thought that he would have had so much fun alone! Now he knows that if his family is ever busy doing other things, he can play and learn things on his own.
Part 3 (optional): Share with your other family/friends (that we aren’t able to see right now)!
Once you have finished crafting your amazing stories, send a video or call/video chat with someone who you are not living with and brighten their day with the gift of your story!
