Plant Sprouting Garden

The Book we read was called “Plants Feed Me” by Lizzy Rockwell. The specified age range for this book is 3-6 years of age, for preschoolers to kindergarteners. The activity I paired with the book is called the creation of a “plant sprouting garden.” This can be done with the help of an adult for children ranging from 3-8. Hailey, the child in the video is 4 years old and the activity was a lot of fun for her with the help of some supervision.

Supplies needed for the activity:
-       Egg carton from a dozen eggs
o   Preferably cardboard but can be plastic
-       Soil
-       Seed packet from any flower/vegetable of your choice
-       Water
o   Can use a cup to disperse water; or a plant mister

Step 1: Fill each of the 12 egg slots in the carton with soil
Step 2: Drop 2-3 seeds within each of the 12 slots of the carton
Step 3: Cover each of the 12 slots with another thin layer of soil to cover the seeds
Step 4: Water liberally (but not to the point of having water seep out of the carton)

Tips for aftercare of the plants:
-       Water daily, checking to see if the soil is dry
-       Keep in a sunny place
o   Outside if the weather is nice
o   Or
o   Inside by a window that gets light
-       When the plant is becoming too large to stay in the egg carton, transplant the plants into a pot or directly into the soil so it can continue to grow!
