Moving Shapes Ball Toss

Target Age Range: Elementary – High School (Entire family activity)

Items Needed: Ball and Chalk

This activity takes place outside, and is a great option to get the whole family moving. This could be a great way for parents who are working from home to get their children outside and active while they need to work. The minimum number of people is 2. Gather everyone who wants to play and get started!

Part 1: Mark your spaces!

Grab a ball, some chalk, and go outside. If you do not have chalk, you could use some rocks, random toys, some shoes or just about anything to mark different places. Begin by drawing random shapes on the concrete (pic below to help explain). If playing with only 2 people, draw at least 6 shapes to have different places to move to. Depending on the size of your family, have around 2 shapes per person.

Part 2: Get Situated!

The goal of the game is to keep the ball off the ground for as long as possible while passing to different people! Have everyone begin at one shape. One person needs to throw the ball up into the air and push it towards someone else. I recommend doing one or two rounds without moving to practice.

Part 3: Play Ball!

Now that you have gotten comfortable not moving, it is time to switch things up. Start these next rounds the same as you were doing before, but after every 2 or 3 hits, have everyone move to another shape. Keep this going for as long as you can keep the ball up.

Part 4: Make It Your Own!

The more everyone moves, the more fun this game is! Here are some options to keep the game exciting and active

1)    Have someone call out specific shapes or colors marked on the ground to go to
2)    Add in another ball to pass around to each other
3)    For younger children, throwing and catching the ball to one another could better suit their abilities
4)    Pass in the same order each time
5)    Draw certain shapes for each person playing, only they can land on those shapes after hitting the ball
