How Clouds Make Rain: A Science Experiment

Clouds and Rain: Create Your Own Weather at Home!Science Experiment
Target Age: Kindergarten/1st Grade (4-6 years old) 

Items Needed:
·      Clear jar or cup
·      White shaving cream
·      Blue liquid food coloring
·      Water

Instructions:
·      Pre – Experiment
o   Show a picture of the rain cloud and explain what you will be doing with the materials.
o   Have the child write down a prediction about what will happen when you add the food coloring.
·      Experiment
o   First start with filling up the clear jar/ cup with water. Explain that the water in the jar is the air around us.
o   Next, have the child put shaving cream on top of the water to represent a cloud
o   Lastly, place several blue liquid food coloring droplets all around the cloud. Watch as the food coloring goes through the “cloud” and down into the “air”.
·      Post - Experiment
o   First, have the child write out the conclusion so the experiment.
o   Have the child draw out the experiment (jar, shaving cream, food coloring).
o   Last, have the child answer five questions relating to the experiment below their drawing.


Post – Experiment Questions
1.     What does the shaving cream represent?
2.     What does the water in the jar represent?
3.     What does the blue food coloring represent?
4.     What happened when we put the food coloring droplets on the shaving cream “cloud”?
5.     What was your favorite part about the experiment?
