DIY Scratch Art

Being a stay at home mother with three kids can be difficult with all the work load you have in just a single day, this being without a pandemic going on. My mom who was this person, had many DIY craft projects for me and my brothers to keep us busy so she can get done what she needed to get done. Scratch art is something you can buy in stores but being able to utilize materials at home to create the same project is easy and keeps us safer during these times. First off Scratch art is simply a piece created by scratching off a black top coat with a coin (or whatever suits your needs) to expose bright beautiful fun colors under! You are able to write or create a beautiful picture and would be easy for mom to display your awesome work! This is suitable to kids of all ages and is super easy to create. All the materials I used to create my own Scratch art piece I was able to find at my own home but also could be found in a dollar store. This project also promotes individuality if you have your children help prep the project due to the availability of using any colors you would like in your bottom coat and top coat of the project.

Materials:
Paper plates (of any size)
Crayons
Acrylic paint (any color)
Paint brush/paint sponge/anything to spread paint

Step 1: Gather all the materials you will need. These are the materials I used that were at home, but you can use any color of paint or if you do not have any of these materials they are all available at dollar stores!

Step 2: Pick what colors you want to use to make a design or color the paper plate.

Step 3: Create a pattern of any kind that will fill up the entire plate. This part can be done the night before or even used as another side project for your kids!

Tip 1: The smaller the design used with each color will allow more color to show through. I used a thicker line for a more transition look.

Tip 2: Color thick so there is little to no white showing through for a bolder and brighter look.

Step 4: PAINT! Apply a thin layer of paint over the crayon design you created. This process may be repeated for desired look and thickness of top coat. While creating this I applied about 3 layers of paint and let it dry over night for more of a semi thick layer.

Tip 1: Remember you do not have to use black paint. I went for more of a traditional look. You can be creative and use any colors you would like!

Step 5: Scratch and be creative! Use a coin or anything with a solid edge to scratch off the acrylic paint and reveal the colors underneath.

Tip: You can use this to help your child learn to write and count (why I put date at the top)

Step 6: Display your beautiful piece!

Tip: Display directly in light, such as on a window, for a more color popping look!
