Charlotte and the Rock

In this video we read Charlotte and the Rock by Stephen Martin. It is best suited for an age range of 3-5 years, though is a lot of fun for all young kids. To pair with the book reading, we wanted to do something where we were able to choose any type of pet that we would want to have and painted a picture of it! There is a lot of room for creativity and imagination. Charlotte, the character from the book, dreams big about all the kinds of animals she would want for a pet and we can do the same too in this activity, where any animal can be painted and hung up on a bedroom wall or fridge for the whole family to enjoy.

Items necessary for this activity:
-          Any paper to paint on
o   A thicker style of paper is best suited so the paint will not seep through
-          Paint
o   You can also use crayons, markers, etc.!
o   Red, yellow and blue are helpful paint colors to have for mixing (refer to infographic on mixing colors)
-          Newspaper
o   Or anything else to keep your table/workplace clean
-          Paintbrushes
o   Fingers work too, if you’re interested in finger-painting
-          A disposable cup/bowl with water
o   To clean off the brush in between colors
-          A disposable container of your choice
o   To hold the paint, and mix colors if necessary
For us personally, we chose to paint kittens! We found this helpful video that gets the creative juices flowing and can be useful for older children wanting to have a guide to painting/drawing too.
